Darlie Laundromatic, Darlinghurst

The dark and slightly steep section of upper Palmer Street is not a place you'd expect to find a small bar. The first clue is the soft red and blue sign glowing, quietly beckoning you. Is there really a bar tucked in this non-descript row of shop fronts and behind these security grilles? And so, you have now stumbled upon Darlie Laundromatic. Keeping a number of the original elements of the pre-existing Laundromat while adding a few new ones (such as a row of tea towels hanging out to dry), this 2012 addition to Surry Hills is both quaint and engaging. Stepping inside just somehow makes you want to smile.

It seems most small bars have quite large prices, but the drinks at Darlie Laundromatic are quite reasonable: starting at $5 for a beer. Likewise, the wine list is both moderate in range and price. The bar itself is compact to say the least, and the open kitchen gives this place a great homely feel. The décor, like the food is a mix between the old and the new, while always managing to be engaging. Don’t be surprised to see mini hot-dogs and warm chorizo and white bean salad sitting side-by-side on the menu. Then there is modern communal table down the centre of the bar surrounding by old vinyl records and knick knacks. Come here for something fun and different.

In brief: Darlie Laundromatic
Best things: Impressive food, good prices
Don't miss: Décor, flipping through the vinyl collection.
Ideal for: Small groups, drinks with a difference, catch-ups with friends
Date tip: Grab the small couches closest to the street
Gripe: Plastic bar stools and chairs could be a bit more sturdy.
Rating: 7/10
